Docutherapy

Documentary as a source of healing, and of hope.

The approach

A lot of my work has revolved around the subjects of trauma, PTSD and recovery.

Much of my current work is inspired by Yonatan Nir’s Docutherapy, a method he developed after his own experience with trauma. It’s built on one idea: how we frame what happened to us shapes how we live with it. Through documentary, people can reframe their story, find growth where there was only pain, and become a source of hope for others who are still inside theirs.

Empathy Without Burnout: Working with Extremely Graphic Footage

Editors, journalists and researchers spend hours with images most people never have to see. Drawing on years of cutting war documentaries, this lecture talks honestly about what that footage does to us, and gives practical tools to keep doing the work without carrying it home. Protecting yourself without becoming desensitised, because empathy is the one tool this work can’t do without.

Resisim Project, NATAL

Trauma takes away control. The story gives it back. Many of the people I meet through Resisim, NATAL’s project for veterans of war, have never told theirs out loud. Together we uncover it and shape it with care, until they become its author, not just someone it happened to. The victim becomes the storyteller, and then the hero.
